According to the vice-Minister of Health Jarosław Pinka, Polish heart-surgery for adults and children is certainly in the lead among all the European countries as well as the rest of the world.
The Chairman of the Polish Heart Surgeons and the Head of the Cardio-surgery Clinic at the Children’s Health Centre, Bohdan Maruszewski, when presenting the achievements of Polish heart surgery, during a presentation in Pułtusk, emphasized that the death rate in Polish heart surgery centers and those in Europe are comparable.
Vice-Minister Pinkas emphasized that Polish heart surgery has no cause for complexes as, unlike many countries, we have a heart surgery program.
According to the Chairman of the Polish Heart Surgeons Club, Bohdan Maruszewski, there has been less operations conducted, including those on coronary heart diseases.
In 2006 alone, there were 13,200 such operations held, which is 600 less than in 2005.
Maruszewski noted, however, that the number of valve operations has risen by over a hundred, reaching 3,500 in 2006.
The level of heart surgery on children (in-born diseases) is remaining the same. The results are definitely among the best in the world, especially when it comes to highly complex operations. “The death rate in this group is lower than that in the rest of Europe”
It is extremely satisfying to see that in 2006, over 60 percent of all those operated in Poland suffering from in-born diseases are under one year old, and every fourth child operated is under 31 days old.
Maruszewski believes that Polish heart surgery is among to the best in Europe.
Poland currently has 30 more heart surgery specialists and four more operating theatres than in 2005.
The most important is that 96 percent patients survive heart surgery in Poland.
Polish heart surgeons are active on an international scale, 220 Polish heart surgeons have participated in international scientific assemblies, 35 have presided over international science sessions and 37 are members of international academic societies. |
