Polish leaders favor early elections to end political crisis

Poland’s president Lech Kaczynski and his twin brother, the prime minister of Poland are in favor of an early election (the latest in the spring of 2008), to end an existing political crisis within the country’s governing coalition.

It is unclear whether they intended to follow through or use the threat of an election to win concessions from coalition partners.

During an press conference, the President said that early elections ARE NECESSARY because the coalition partners keep stirring up a racket.

The government of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the president's twin brother, has been increasingly bogged down in fighting with two smaller parties in a nationalist, conservative coalition led by his Law and Justice party.

So far, Law and Justice have shunned that step, although it has threatened early elections in the past to tighten the reins on its coalition partners who, according to latest polls, would lose seats in a new parliament.

The coalition has proved uneasy and erupted into a crisis earlier in July when the prime minister fired Self-Defense leader Andrzej Lepper as deputy prime minister and agriculture minister over corruption allegations.
On Tuesday, the prime minister appointed a new agriculture minister, Wojciech Mojzesowicz, a one-time Self-Defense member who now belongs to the Law and Justice party. In response, Prime Minister Kaczynski said Self-Defense's proposal for the post, Krzysztof Sikora, lacked the needed qualifications and that he "could not accept" him.
Kaczynski also said that, if Self-Defense were to leave the government, he would oversee a minority government until new elections are held.
