Poland backs down in dispute with EU over highway through protected wetlands

At last, decision to start the work on building a highway through one of Europe’s last pristine wetlands, have been put on hold while the government awaits a decision on an EU injunction aimed at stopping the construction.
Kaczynski informed that the work in the Rospuda Valley which is part of the Nature 2000 area in Poland, is not beginning, however, work would still be carried out on the other parts of the highway outside of the environmentally protected area.
Poland's original decision to go ahead with the project despite EU opposition had threatened to further exacerbate tensions between Brussels and Warsaw, which have been at odds over a number of issues since Kaczynski's nationalist party won elections in 2005.
The highway construction project, via Baltica is a part of a road linking Warsaw to Helsinki via the Baltic States. It would bypass the northeastern town of Augustow by cutting through 500 meters (yards) of peat bog surrounded by a virgin pine forest that is home to eagles, wolves, lynx and wild orchids.
The EU said Monday it was seeking a legal injunction to prevent Poland from starting construction. Ignoring a court order could have brought Poland hefty fines.
According to Kaczynski, adding that blocking construction of the contested stretch of highway has “no legal grounds.”
