| The Minneapolis bridge collapsed sending cars into the Mississippi River
One of the major bridges connecting the twin cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul, has collapsed on Wednesday evening into the Mississippi River creating a scene of horror.
At first a strange noise, followed by the break of huge sections of concrete and twisted metal sent a thick cloud of dust into the air as the bridge gave way.
The tragedy happened at 6:05 pm, sending dozens of cars into the water below.
Police lowered the number of confirmed fatalities to four, from seven, but said they expected the number to change throughout the day. At least 60 people were injured. Many are in a critical condition.
The Homeland Security Department spokesman said that the collapse does not appear to be an act of terrorism.
The bridge was built in 1967.
About nine months ago a maintenance project began to repair potholes and other concrete on the bridge. No work was done on the actual structure under the bridge.
The eight lanes Interstate 35W, during the construction allow only two lanes of traffic. At the time of the disaster, witness say, the traffic was bumper to bumper. All of the cars did go into the river.
The National Transportation Safety Board highway investigation team will be heading to Minneapolis first thing Thursday morning.
